Research Data Storage

What data storage options are available to me?

Data Storage

There are a range of storage solutions for your research data. The most appropriate storage solution will depend on a number of factors including the type of data, size, rate of growth, retention, performance, access, etc.

UniSA Storage

UniSA Research Data Storage

UniSA offers a Research Data Storage solution which enables researchers to manage, collaborate and share data with others. Hosted on both Mawson Lakes and City West data centres the UniSA Research Data Storage solution provides high capacity storage, with data protected through daily backups and via data replication technologies.

Researchers using the UniSA Research Data Storage solution are initially provided with 50GB of storage space. Storage can also be allocated to research groups (including external partners). Access to a group storage allocation is managed by the requesting researcher and the total storage space available for individuals and groups is open to negotiation.

Researchers can easily access their files remotely and work with members of their research group and external collaborators through a web interface or from an app on a mobile device.

Home Drive (R Drive)

Each individual UniSA research staff member is allocated 50GB of storage by default. This storage is generally referred to as your 'Home Drive' and is usually mapped as your R drive by default. While Home Drive is commonly used as scratch space, researchers are free to use their Home Drive space as they see fit.

Your Home Drive storage is hosted onsite in our Mawson Lakes and City West data centres, and your data is secured through daily backups and protected via data replication technologies.

UniSA Group Drive (G Drive)

UniSA Group Drive storage is hosted onsite in our Mawson Lakes and City West data centres, and data is secured through daily backups and protected via data replication technologies. If your group has been granted storage through your local IT this storage allocation is generally referred to as the ‘Group Drive’ and is usually mapped as your G drive by default (this may vary depending on circumstances, and you may have more than one Group Drive if you are contributing to more than one group).

OneDrive

OneDrive for Business

OneDrive is an online service provided by Microsoft that allows you to create, upload, access and share files from a web browser. OneDrive offers 1TB of online storage with access from any device connected to the internet. All files you store in OneDrive are private; however, you can choose to share files with anyone you nominate.

Note: OneDrive should not be used to store 'sensitive' research data or other data subject to privacy requirements.
