Honorary Awards and Honorary Academic Titles

POLICY NO: C-37

Purpose

1. To detail the principles informing, and criteria applying to, the granting of honorary awards and honorary academic titles by the University of South Australia.

Scope

2. Applies to the honorary awards and honorary academic titles specified in paragraph 15 below, and to staff engaged in conduct or practices related to granting, managing or reviewing those awards and titles.

3. Extraordinary honorary professorial titles conferred for limited periods on current University staff (for example, Bradley Distingued Professor, Distinguished Professor and Industry Professor) are not covered by this policy.

Responsibilities

4. Council is the approving authority for this policy.

5. The Vice Chancellor is the officer responsible for organisation-wide adherence to this policy.

6. Council has delegated to the Governance and Nominations Committee (GNC) authority to review nominations for:

  1. Doctor of the University (DUniv)
  2. Fellow of the University (FUniSA), and
  3. Emeritus Professor.

7. Council has delegated to the Vice Chancellor authority to confer the title Vice Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow.

8. Council has delegated to the Honorary Awards and Honorary Academic Titles Committee (HAHAT) authority to confer the designations Adjunct and Visiting at the level of Associate Professor (level D) or above.

9. Council has delegated to Executive Deans and Directors of Research Institutes the authority to confer the designations of Adjunct and Visiting at the level of Lecturer (level C) or below.

10. All University staff and representatives are expected to comply with the provisions of this policy and with all associated procedures and guidelines.

Principles

11. The University Council will from time to time confer honorary awards and academic titles upon individuals who meet the criteria established by Council for those awards and titles.

12. Awards and titles so conferred will recognise and reward:

  1. significant and eminent contributions to scholarship, professional practice or service to the University and the community,
  2. exceptional achievements by staff, and
  3. regular and significant contributions to the teaching and research activities of the University.

13. Recipients of honorary awards and titles are expected to:

  1. reflect and represent the University’s ethos and values in an exemplary manner,
  2. advance the University’s reputation and standing in the community, and
  3. provide inspiration to students and graduates of the University.

14. No person may nominate themselves for an honorary award or honorary title.

Honorary Awards and Honorary Academic Titles Conferred by the University

15. The University Council has determined that the following honorary awards may be conferred:

  1. Doctor of the University (DUniv): This award will recognise an individual’s eminence in education, research or service to the University or the wider community.
  2. Fellow of the University (FUniSA): This award will recognise an individual’s distinguished service or support to the University or its community beyond the expectations of their usual roles and responsibilities.

16. The University Council has determined that the following honorary academic titles may be conferred:

  1. Emeritus Professor: This title will recognise, upon retirement, Professors of the University who have given distinguished service to the University.
  2. Vice Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow: This title will recognise candidates who have achieved recognition for outstanding achievements in their field. These achievements will be in an area of relevance to the University’s teaching, research or scholarship.
  3. Adjunct Designation: The designation Adjunct will recognise individuals who are not members of University staff but who make regular and significant contributions to teaching, research or scholarship at the University.
  4. Visiting Designation: The designation Visiting will recognise academics, employed by other institutions, who are collaborating with the University in teaching, research or scholarship activities.

17. The criteria established by Council for each honorary award and honorary academic title is listed below.

Criteria for Conferral of UniSA Honorary Awards and Academic Titles

AWARD/TITLE

CRITERIA FOR CONFERRAL

Doctor of the University (DUniv)

 

This award will recognise an individual’s eminence in education, research or service to the University or the wider community. Recipients will meet one or more of the following criteria:

·   An outstanding national or international reputation in a field of education and/or research.

·   An outstanding contribution to society, which has advanced human wellbeing.

·   An outstanding contribution to society, which has influenced the thinking of the wider community.

·   Exceptional service, professional and public, to a particular discipline.

The title will not be awarded to a current staff member of the University.

The Recipient of this award is entitled to use the postnominal (DUniv) but is not entitled to preface their name with the title ‘Dr’.

Fellow of the University (FUniSA)

This award will recognise an individual’s distinguished service or support to the University or its community beyond the expectations of their usual roles and responsibilities. Recipients will meet one or more of the following criteria:

·   Outstanding support for the interests of the University generally, or the interests of particular University entities or activities

·   Effective promotion or facilitation of the academic purposes of the University, or those of particular University entities or activities

·   Exceptional commitment to, and support for, the welfare of University students

·   An exceptional contribution to the expansion of educational opportunities to community groups the University considers have suffered disadvantages in education

·   An exceptional contribution to the fostering of links between the University and other institutions, nationally and internationally

·   Outstanding service to the University community, or to a community within which the University operates

The title will not be awarded to a current staff member of the University.

Emeritus Professor

This title will recognise, upon retirement, Professors of the University who have given distinguished service to the University. Recipients will meet the following criteria:

·   An international reputation, and professional peer recognition, for research and scholarship.

·   A demonstrable track record of team leadership and capacity building in research or teaching

·   Participation in University management and/or governance

·   Service contributions to a discipline, a profession, the University and the wider community

The title will not normally be conferred upon an academic staff member who resigns from the University to take up a post at another University, except in special circumstances such as appointment as Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor or Pro Vice Chancellor at another University.

Vice Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow

This title, for which only the Vice Chancellor can nominate a recipient, will acknowledge candidates who have achieved recognition for outstanding achievements in their field. These achievements will be in an area of relevance to the University’s teaching, research or scholarship. Recipients will be considered to have achieved professional status and recognition equivalent to the rank of Professor.

Adjunct Designation

This title recognises individuals who are not members of University staff but who make regular and significant contributions to teaching, research or scholarship at the University. Recipients may be:

·   previous members of staff who maintain their association with and continue to contribute to the work of the University,

·   industry or international collaborators who work in partnership with the University.,

·   staff of other institutions or entities who are recognised for their contribution to the University, or

·   clinical adjuncts, who contribute to the teaching of the University by supervising placements or teaching in clinical work.

The titles available for conferral are Adjunct Professor, Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Industry Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Research Fellow and Research Associate or any variation of them. The level of title conferred will be determined on the basis of either the contribution expected of the recipient, or the criteria applying to academic staff appointments at the University.

Visiting Designation

This title recognises academics employed by other academic institutions who are collaborating with the University in teaching, research or scholarship activities.

The titles available for conferral are Visiting Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Research Fellow and Research Associate. The level of title conferred will be determined on the basis of (a) the contribution expected of the recipient, (b) the criteria applying to academic staff appointments at the University, or (c) the recipient’s title at their employing institution.
