Homeless youth on stairs

JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST HOMELESSNESS

More than 116,000 Australians find themselves homeless any given night of the year.

On the night of Friday 30 August, UniSA hosted a community sleepout on the Amy Wheaton Lawns at UniSA Magill campus to raise funds to support Vinnies's homeless services in South Australia.

Homelessness is a growing problem; more people than ever are turning to Vinnies for help. With your support they can continue to provide a hand up, not just a handout to assist thousands of homeless people every night.

If you have any questions then get in touch with the UniSA Volunteering team at volunteering@unisa.edu.au.

Event Details

On the night, there will be special guest speakers to help inform you of the issues surrounding homelessness in South Australia and beyond.

You’ll get a hot supper and be able to warm up with a hot chocolate, tea or coffee.

A documentary about homelessness will be screened in the auditorium and then participants will need to set up their “bed” for the night on the Amy Wheaton Lawns.

In the morning you’ll get a snack and hot drink before you head off.

Dinner, snacks, and warm beverages will be provided throughout the night thanks to our generous food sponsors, Since I Met Harry and Phat Buddha Rolls. Here's what you need to bring yourselves:

  • A cardboard box or yoga mat to sleep on
  • A sleeping bag (this will suit you best if it’s rated for minus temperatures, and accompanied by a pillow!)
  • A toiletries bag, complete with toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Any medication you require (e.g. your asthma puffer)

Yes, provided they are over 18 years of age.

Direct them to Eventbrite to complete their registration, and then you can choose whether to to fundraise as a team or as individuals.

Current students of UniSA are permitted to attend if they are under 18 years of age. Please contact the event organisers (email studentlife@unisa.edu.au) if you have any further questions regarding this matter.

If you’re not able to sleep out, there are a number of other ways you can help:

  • Encourage your friends to participate by sharing the event on social media.
  • Donate to the UniSA Community Sleepout GoFundraise page, or one of your friend's or friend's team's pages, to support the cause for Vinnies SA.
  • Ask any of your friends who are participating how you can help them to spread the word and fundraise.

We will be sleeping within university grounds, with staff and campus security on location.

However, there have been reports of Drop Bears in recent weeks so we encourage participants to be vigilant ;)

Regardless of the weather the event will go ahead. (This is an experiential event designed to introduce you to what it’s like to sleep rough. There will however be shelter close by should it rain).

Registration and Fundraising

Yes, if you are a UniSA student.

Any members of the community under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Register your attendance via Eventbrite, and then start fundraising!

Yes! Your friends and colleagues are welcome to join your team once you have created it.

They just need to register for the event through Eventbrite too, and then select to ‘Join an existing team’ when they go to set up their fundraising page.

There is no limit on the number of people in a team! You can choose to sleepout and fundraise as a team all rallied together, or to do so individually!

Fundraising is strongly encouraged as every dollar raised will help Vinnies provide essential services to people experiencing homelessness.

You can check out our Fundraising tips page for some help on how to get started. It can be as easy as donating $10, $20, or $30 yourself to demonstrate your commitment, and then sharing on social media and/or via email with your friends, family, and colleagues – you’ll be surprised at how many people are willing to support this worthy cause!

Regardless of how much money you raise, we still encourage you to attend the event.

Yes! We will be acknowledging the highest fundraising individual and the highest fundraising team on the night with a prize.
