UniSA Staff email security

16 April 2018 ISTS partnered with Mimecast (our secure email gateway provider) to implement new technology to protect staff from email threats.

These new enhancements are designed to make staff and the University safer from cyber security threats. However, no technology is perfect and staff should always treat unsolicited (or unknown senders) with a degree of caution. Some of these features include:

To safeguard staff from bad links in emails:

  • Every time staff click on a link in an email, the system will perform a security check on the site they are trying to access.
    • If the site is fine, access will continue as normal.
    • If the site is bad, access will be blocked.

Guarding dangerous email attachments:

  • Emails coming from external senders will have attachments scanned for malware before the email is delivered.
  • If any attachments are deemed dangerous they will be automatically blocked.

Protection of email from people pretending to be someone else:

  • If an email is suspected of being from an impostor, ISTS will add a message at the top of the email and the subject line will contain “Suspicious Email”.

To give staff greater control on who can send them emails and how to manage spam:

  • Email that may be marked as spam can now be reviewed by staff and either be allowed, rejected, permitted or the sender blocked.

Further details can be found on the staff email security page.
