How is a grade point average (GPA) calculated?

The grade point average (GPA) is defined as the following:

  • the sum of (grade points x course unit values), divided by the sum of course unit values.

The GPA result is truncated to two decimal places, not round.

The grade point for each grade is as follows:

Grade Notation Mark Grade Point
High Distinction HD 85 -100 7
Distinction D 75 - 84 6
Credit C 65 - 74 5
Pass 1 P1 55 - 64 4.5
Pass 2 P2 50 - 54 4
Non Graded Pass NGP 50 - 100 see information below
Supplementary Pass SP 50 3.5
Conceded Pass* CP N/A 3
Terminating Pass* TP N/A 3
Fail 1 F1 40 - 49 1.5
Withdraw Fail WF N/A 1.5
Fail 2 F2 0 - 40 1
Fail F Below 50 1.5
Withdraw - not fail W N/A N/A

Non-graded passes (NGP) are only included if the GPA is less than four, in which case they are worth four grade points. If the GPA (without counting the NGP) is higher than four, any NGPs are not counted.

*From 2017, conceded passes (CP) and terminating passes (TP) are no longer awarded. These grades, when used, attracted a Grade Point value of 3.

Example 1:
Study Period Grade Grade Point Unit Value Grade value
Course 1 C 5 4.5 5 x 4.5 = 22.5
Course 2 C 5 4.5 5 x 4.5 = 22.5
Course 3 P1 4.5 4.5 4.5 x 4.5 = 20.25
Course 4 P2 4 4.5 4 x 4.5 = 18
Total     18 83.25
Calculation: - Divide the grade value total by the unit value total. GPA should be calculated to the second decimal only
83.25 divided 18 = GPA 4.62
Example 2:
Study Period Grade Grade Point Unit Value Grade value
Course 1 C 5 9 5 x 9 = 45.0
Course 2 C 5 4.5 5 x 4.5 = 22.5
Total     13.5 67.5
Calculation: - Divide the grade value total by the unit value total. GPA should be calculated to the second decimal only
67.5 divided 13.5 = GPA 5
