Residency requirements of a Commonwealth supported place

Australian citizens

To meet the residency requirements to be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) Australian citizens must live in Australia for at least part of their program.

For example, if you intend on studying overseas via distance education for your entire program, then you would not meet the CSP residency requirements and you are not eligible for a Commonwealth supported place.

New Zealand citizens and/or New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV) holders, Permanent Residents and Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders

New Zealand citizens and/or New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV) holders, Permanent Residents and Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders must live in Australia for the duration of their program to be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place.

However, any period of residence outside Australia will be disregarded if:

  • it cannot reasonably be regarded as indicating an intention to reside outside Australia for the duration of a course; or
  • it is required for the purpose of completing a requirement of that course.
