FAQs on COVID-19 Travel Insurance

Claims resulting from an unforeseen circumstance outside the control of UniSA or the Traveller including:

a) Loss of Deposits, if the Journey is necessarily altered or cancelled prior to commencement; or

b) Unbudgeted additional or forfeited Travel or Accommodation Expenses or, out of pocket expenses are necessarily incurred, due to:

i.   the Travellers unexpected death from COVID-19; or

ii.  the traveller contracting COVID-19, claims for Medical, Evacuation and Additional Expenses arising from COVID-19 are covered while travelling overseas; or

iii. the Traveller, a Close Relative, Close Colleague or travelling companion of the Traveller being directed by a health authority to quarantine because of a close contact with a positive or suspected positive case of COVID-19; or

 iv.  a Close Relative, Close Colleague or travelling companion of the Traveller contracting COVID-19, or their unexpected death from COVID-19, which prevents the Traveller commencing/continuing the Journey as planned.

(All of the above are subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of the Travel Insurance Policy).

Travel insurance will NOT cover cancellation and disruption of travel where the loss directly or indirectly arises from, relates to, or is in any way connected with COVID-19 (or any mutation or variation thereof or any related strain) and/or its outbreak (COVID-19 Exclusion) as COVID-19 is a known event.

If the travel is taken during the course of the study/exchange, medical, evacuation & additional expenses will still be covered. 

  • We consider this to be part of UniSA business as it is an inherent requirement of the trip. 
  • However, the cost to quarantine would not be covered as this would be a foreseen event.
  • COVID-19 - Would not be covered for COVID-19 is a foreseeable event and COVID-19 requirements are subject to change at any time.  The insurance policy covers unforeseen events outside of the travellers control, from March 2020 Chubb have determined that COVID-19 is no longer an unforeseen event for all countries.  Unforeseen is not defined in the policy but the dictionary definition includes “not anticipated or predicted”.
  • Other - Would be covered if DFAT rating changes to Level 4 due to political/civil issues (non-Covid)

 

Cover provided where traveller necessarily incurs reasonable additional hotel or out-of-pocket expenses as a result of being certified by a Doctor as unfit to continue the Journey; or the unexpected compulsory quarantine of the traveller due to a direction from Health authority or due to being a close contact of a positive or suspected case of COVID-19.

No.  Policy has unlimited medical expense cover with a $250 excess.  USA is not specifically mentioned in the policy.  Chubb Assistance will handle any issues regarding high medical costs and will deal with the hospital regarding the expenses.

Cancellation costs arising due to traveller contracting COVID-19 prior to departure from Australia and being unfit/forbidden to travel would be covered
