Strategic Thinkers 2025

Due to the significant number of applications received in 2019, places for this Strategic Thinkers Program from February – June 2020 have already been filled. 

As Australia’s University of Enterprise, UniSA is deeply committed to developing a diverse and high performing workforce and an enterprising culture in which talented people thrive. Strategic Thinkers 2025 will help to contribute to the University’s Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) pilot by providing academic and professional women with practical tools and approaches to advance their careers.

The program will focus on developing future female leaders’ skills in the areas of self-awareness, developing strategy, relationships, the value of communication and leading innovation and creativity.

Our target audience is academic women in academic levels B or C roles and professional HEO levels 7-10+. To be considered for the program, participants will ideally already be managing a team and considered potential future leaders ready for the next step in their career by their nominating manager. Participants need to demonstrate a high degree of personal ownership for their continued professional development, the motivation to pursue it and an aspiration for growth, theirs and that of their teams.

We are inviting leaders to nominate female staff from their area who would thrive through this development program. 

All sessions are run by Tracy Maxted, Director: The Missing Think.


The People, Talent and Culture team will bring together a group of eighteen female staff that have been nominated by their leaders to experience a series of development workshops. Based on previous years’ feedback, this program has been extended to a 5-part series and details of each session are outlined below. Attendance at all sessions is required. 

On completion of the program, participants will have;

  • Developed the knowledge and skills to drive cultural and strategic changes within their current roles and across UniSA;
  • Gained a clear understanding of the link between strategic thinking and execution and the leader’s role in translating strategy into action
  • Developed strategic perspective to facilitate personal confidence, build resilience and deliver results;
  • The confidence to promote continuous improvement through an enterprise perspective;
  • Developed a personal brand that role models outstanding leadership behaviours based on our core attributes, and;
  • Extended their peer network across UniSA.

2020 Workshop Structure


Workshop 1: Enterprising Self

Date: Thursday 13 February 2020
Time: 9.00am – 4.30pm

  • Unpack "Strategic" and "Excellence"
  • Define goals for own development over the course of the program (incorporating goals agreed with line manager/ sponsor)
  • Develop a plan to create/ build an Enterprising Mindscape
  • Identify current internal and external blocks
  • Commit to strategies to eliminate/ reduce/ enable
  • Value of Personal Brand within the University and outside networks
  • Linguistic techniques to hold self-accountable for modelling leadership and excellence
  • Tools and strategies to develop leadership impact


Workshop 2: Enterprising Strategy

  • Understand and apply elements of great strategy
  • Identify and eliminate Execution Gaps
  • Strategic Time Management (defining and banishing ‘busy work’)
  • Define individual and team strategic priorities
  • Workshop techniques to ensure the ‘real’ work gets done, regardless of environmental challenges
  • Resilience strategies to overcome barriers, setbacks and challenges


Workshop 3: Enterprising Relationships

  • Leverage the principles of Enterprising Self to lead others
  • Increase Influencing capabilities for strategic success
  • Develop Leadership through Trust
  • Reframe and leverage positive conflict


Workshop 4: Enterprising Communication (pre-work required – profiling tool)

  • Introduce Behavioural Profiling Model and unpack individual results
  • Chunk self-awareness to the next level and plan for improved future strategic outcomes through personal effectiveness and communication dexterity

Workshop 5: Enterprising Innovation and Creativity

  • Explore what it means as individuals and leaders to lead Creative Enterprise
  • Not leaving ‘A-ha-lightbulb’ moments to serendipity

  • Link back to Strategic Excellence, personal responsibility and professional brand to create a clear plan for continuing development after the completion of the program
