What is H5P?

H5P is an online tool you can use to create interactive content for your course. There are over 40 different types of interactivity available, which include: Presentations, Video annotations, Drag and drop, Hot spots. Fill in the blanks or Quizzes. You can find H5P via your Learnonline Course site – simply click on the ‘Add a Resource’ dropdown.

Setting up my course site for teaching

Do you (or people in your team) need to prepare a learnonline course site for the start of SP5? The TIU is holding support sessions where there will be Online Educational Designers ready to help. We can tailor the support to your needs. What we cover can include (but is not limited to):

  • Preparing your Course Site
  • Assessment Setup
  • Moodle basics
  • eReader
  • Panopto

To get the most from these sessions you may need:

  • Access and editing rights to your learnonline course site
  • Authority and access to create or copy a course site
  • Authority to access, create, copy or publish a Course Outline
  • Topic and assessment information

You can check your learnonline course site access by accessing the teaching portal from the UniSA homepage. If your course is not listed in your portal, you will not have access and will need to be added to the course by your school timetabler. If you have access to your learnonline course site, check that your ‘Task list’ has links to create or copy (or green ticks to show tasks are completed). If you do not have these links, you will not have the ability to make changes and will need to raise this with your school timetabler.

Engaging Learners in the Classroom (ELiC)

This 4-hour workshop is designed for all educators who will teach face to face in tutorial settings. It is particularly helpful for those who are new to teaching as well as those more experienced educators that want to refresh their skills in face to face teaching. The workshop will develop your skills in the following topics as well as provide an opportunity for you to explore an area that is of interest to you personally.

Introduction to Flipped Classrooms

The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model for teaching and learning particularly suited to the digitally networked education environment here at UniSA. This fairly simple example of blended learning utilises the best of face-to-face and online learning by flipping the traditional education model of higher education. Instead of attending lectures, students view content digitally in their own time and use their time attending class to work in structured active learning environments with their peers. This can introduce students to a more productive and engaging classroom experience. This ‘flipped’ workshop will outline the design and delivery of the model, discuss some of the challenges to implementation and set you on the path to creating a flipped classroom experience for your students.

Introduction to Engaging Learners Online (IELO)

As a tutor, you play a pivotal role in facilitating teaching and learning in online courses. In this introductory course, we will identify the essential practices of an effective online tutor as well as tackling some of the unique challenges of teaching online. Alongside a community of your peers, you will learn:

  • how to facilitate online learning that engages students
  • strategies that encourage and support student learning
  • how to overcome some of the unique challenges of online learning, and
  • where to find help when you get stuck.

As a ‘student’ in this course, you will also experience what online learning is like and take away practical strategies you can use in your own teaching. 

Learning mode: Fully Online (80% asynchronous and 20% synchronous)

Duration: 5 hours over one week

Expected outcomes:

  • Define the key characteristics of online learning and teaching.   
  • Identify learning and teaching strategies suitable for actively engaging learners in the online environment.  
  • Outline approaches for building an online community of learning. 
  • Distinguish appropriate learning and teaching pedagogies for synchronous and asynchronous modalities.  
  • Summarise methods for effectively communicating and providing feedback to online learners.  

This course is ideal for those with an active teaching role in online courses. It does not cover designing curriculum, course sites or assessment. All staff have view-only access to the course content, however enrolment priority is given to tutors for an active learning experience and recognition of participation. Each offering will have a maximum number of 24 participants. Once enrolled you can expect to spend 4 hours across Monday-Thursday learning asynchronously with a compulsory synchronous session on the Friday 12.30-1.30pm.

Engaging Learners Online (ELO)

Engaging Learners Online is a short course that aims to prepare you for being a teacher within active online environments.

By completing the 3 core modules in the short course you will experience life as an online student before you need to teach in this space. You will experience most learnonline activity types (forum, wiki, quiz, database, glossary, choice, lesson, feedback, h5p, panopto, virtual classroom) as well as learn more about the role of an online tutor supporting students' learning. We hope that this will not only increase your confidence in learnonline but also help you to develop empathy for the online learner.

This short course is offered completely online over a 4 week period and requires approximately 12 hours to complete all activities and assessments. Most of the course is delivered asynchronously (at a time and place that suits you) but there are also 2 real-time events.

A record of completion of Engaging Learners Online is provided as a certificate and also noted in your HR record.

Using group work

Group work is the mechanism for teaching students about teamwork skills. But does calling a group a team make them a team? And does wishing for them to work as a team work? This workshop explores strategies you can use to improve your and your students’ experiences of group work and help get them ready for the workplace.

Feedback for Learning

Feedback plays a crucial role in any learning process, as it contributes to shaping students’ behaviour, influencing future engagement and achievement. Amount, timing and quality of feedback received are also taken as indicators of teaching and course quality. Finally, seeking, giving and receiving feedback are important lifelong learning skills.

In this workshop, we explore the nature of feedback and some of the conditions that enable the provision of effective feedback in university courses. Some of the key points addressed in this workshop are: Feedback loops and iterative assessment; developing students’ feedback literacy; feedback and self-regulation; academic, social, and emotional aspects of feedback; peer-feedback; the feedback sandwich and other feedback models.
