POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES

The Business Career Mentor Program has a minimum requirement of 6 x 1 hour meetings over the course of the program.  In addition to meetings, mentors usually suggest activities for skill development to assist mentees to achieve their goals.  Below is a list of suggested activities that you are able to recommend for your mentee:

Possible Activities
  • Mentoring Plan (highly recommended)        
  • Orientation to the mentor’s workplace (a quick tour, meet other staff, etc)  
  • Job-shadowing (following the mentor or a colleague through a typical day/morning)         
  • Explore learning a specific skill, such as networking, report writing, job seeking strategies and resume writing        
  • Professional practice tasks      
  • Following a project through its various stages, including client meetings or team meetings, site visits or final inspections        
  • Self-development activities (self-assessment, setting personal goals, career paths, skills audit and personality profiling)

Field Trip / Site Visit
A visit to a site or location relevant to field of study, to actively discuss location in context of study.

Internship 
A paid or unpaid structured program offered through an employer. Networking Event:  An external networking event recommended by or attended with a mentor outside of the Business Career Mentor Program events.

Practicum
An in curriculum, assessed project based work experience opportunity.

Paid Employment
Casual, part time or full time paid employment received through a mentor referral.

Vacation Program 
A structured employment based program over the holiday period.

Work Placement Scheme 
Approved project based work experience opportunity that has a maximum duration of 16 weeks (160 hours). Is extra-curricular, includes insurance and has been assessed by the Careers and Alumni Team for compliance with the Fair Work Act.

Work Shadowing
Observing a mentor's day to day duties in a work place context.

SHARE AN OPPORTUNITY

If you have an opportunity that you are able to offer to other students in the program, for example a site visit, you can promote to other mentors via the monthly e-newsletters. If you would like to include an opportunity please contact the Business Careers Mentoring Team.
