How You Make A Difference

Student Testimonials from past programs

Job interview preparation

"Being able to meet with my mentor the day before my interview was an invaluable opportunity. He reviewed the job description and was able to provide me with insights to both the job and the organisation, was able to give me a better understanding of the job and what it might entail, as well as provide information in regards to the industry and the organisation. We reviewed some of the typical interview questions, as well as questions that were specific to the job. This was fantastic preparation and a few of the questions came up in my interview. I felt very prepared going into the interview and I partly owe this to my mentor".

Cover letters

"I felt her advice was enormously helpful because I find it very difficult to write a good cover letter. She helped me see it from the perspective of the person reading it".

Confidence

"I expressed my concerns that I had spent a lot of my time at university participating in extracurricular activities because I thought it would better my chances of employment but was feeling unsure about it all because of my unsuccessful job applications. He assured me that undertaking such activities would put me highly in employer’s minds and that I hadn’t made the wrong decision in partaking in such activities. I really reflected upon what he said because it made me realise that if I hadn’t undertaken these activities, I wouldn’t necessarily have the skills and confidence I do today".

Internship/graduate employment assistance

"Following a successful application process, in which XXXX has mentored me through, I was offered employment as a graduate for 2014. I have accepted this role. At our meeting we reflected upon all the stages of the application process. We also talked about how I felt I had gone during the interview. He said that they were very impressed with the amount of preparation I had put into applying for this position. Having him as a mentor was so truly beneficial to me in the application process as I had the opportunity to ask questions about the bank, its structure, the daily tasks of a Business Banker and other things that helped me in confirming my decision that this was the right job for me and helped me in answering some of the position orientated questions in the interview".

"I showed my mentor my clerkship application which included my cover letter and CV and received some really positive feedback from him in relation to this which was really reassuring. We went through some typical legal clerkship interview questions which he was familiar with having been on the clerkship interview panel in his previous employment. I found this extremely helpful, especially with the constructive feedback of a professional in the field. I definitely now feel a lot more confident for my interview".

Networks

"My mentor rubs shoulders with many people in Advertising and marketing roles, mentioning many people that he would be able to introduce me to".

"My mentor mentioned that he has an industry contact that he could put me in touch with. Someone who would be able to give me a better view of the not-for-profit work organisation. This would be a fantastic opportunity".

Two Way Street

"My mentor is very happy with all the effort that I am putting in to get to know my industry and young professionals in it. He often says that my unwavering enthusiasm is a pick-me-up for him and very much enjoys how energized he feels after our meetings. I feel exactly the same and that’s how I know that this mentorship likely to continue long after this program has finished".

When It Does Not Work

On occasions, despite our best efforts, sometimes a relationship just won’t work. We have a ‘no blame’ clause for situations that cannot be resolved. If you believe that your student match is failing please contact a member of the Business Career Mentor Program team to discuss. In some instances, strategies can be implemented to rectify the problem but in others we will make a decision to discontinue the relationship.
