Light up at UniSA’s Diwali festival
Expect your senses to come alive at the UniSA Diwali festival, with an array of colour, light, food, dancing and traditional Indian sounds.

Diwali is the festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps". Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance".

Join us on the day for a fun afternoon of lively DJ tunes and enjoy:
• Performances of rhythmic dhol tasha drumming and student cultural dance
• Indian Rangoli art and the chance to draw your own beautiful patterns
• Capturing the memories with your friends in the photobooth with Diwali inspired props
• Expressing yourself with creative henna tattoos
• Delicious food by Mela Masters of Indian Food

Meet our PhD student driving towards personalised ovarian cancer treatment
With an affinity for the technical science of pharmacy and biomedical research, Cintya Dharmayanti, PhD candidate at UniSA’s Applied Chemistry and Translational Biomaterials Group, has won the 2021 Three Minute Thesis competition.

She won with her presentation, Highway to Health: Driving towards personalised ovarian cancer treatment, detailing her work into the development of a nanoparticle system for ovarian cancer drug delivery, potentially leading to more effective treatments and reduced side effects.

“A woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer today would only have about a 50/50 chance of seeing the year 2026. The reason behind this low number lies partially in the treatment. While one patient may respond remarkably well to traditional chemotherapy, another, of the same age, the same diagnosis, and the same disease progression, may show little to no response at all… We need treatments that are tailored to each individual. We need personalised treatment.” Cintya says.

Cintya is currently a PhD candidate in the Applied Chemistry and Translational Biomaterials (ACTB) Group under the primary supervision of Associate Professor Anton Blencowe, where the team spend their time discovering and testing innovative solutions to challenges across biomedical and conservation sectors.
