Learn about ETHOS: DIY DNA
|
|
Do you like to keep your genetic material to yourself, or at least your nearest and dearest? Do you worry about your DNA heading out into the world and getting up to no good?
Join Professor Leanne Dibbens from UniSA Clinical and Health Sciences, and Dr Eric Hsu from UniSA Justice and Society to hear about their investigations in to what our genetic materials say about us, and consider the moral and legal implications of digging into our heredity. The forum will begin with a provocation video by Dr Helen Pynor and Dr Jimmy Breen about how they collected, extracted, and sequenced their own DNA just by breathing.
There will be a free drink and snack on arrival, and the bar will be open for drink purchases. |

Listen to a new season of MOD.Cast
|
|
In this season of MOD.Cast we’re getting up close…. really close. We have teamed up Radio Adelaide and UniSA Journalism students, Elise Graham and Ayla Liebenberg, to explore the underlying themes of our online exhibition UP CLOSE. We’ll put humanity under the microscope and look at how things within us, on us, and around us influence our personal and shared experiences. We’ll consider what drives our responses to touch, humour, relationships, and our environment, and look at how our connections with machines will augment and enhance our lives into the future. |

UniSA creative alumni taking Adelaide by storm
|
|
From humble beginnings to holding Adelaide’s social scene in the palm of their hands, Lucy and Rachel are the dynamic duo taking over South Australia’s events industry. The pair, who studied here at UniSA, started up their own creative studio in 2016 when they found a niche market missing in Adelaide. Rachel Evans, who completed a Bachelor of Graphic Design, describes how university gave her the software skills and eye for design that she needs to bring her visions to life. Lucy Temme, who completed a Bachelor of Journalism, always saw herself doing something hands on and creative.
Their business, Hygge Studio,
is a one-stop-shop for all things ‘events’, offering the full package of event styling, management, graphics, floristry, lighting, and custom design/hire. Hygge was initially founded as a boutique graphics studio, consulting on branding, logos and website design by Co-Creative Director Rachel. In the following months, Lucy, now partner in crime and Co-Creative Director, jumped on board with the idea, bringing her flare of styling to the table - whilst in the midst of planning her own wedding.
“Our Hygge hire team are continuously creating and building new concepts and designs for our hire range, and our styling and graphics team have the ability to create anything your heart desires!” Lucy says.
Over
the years, their business concept continued to develop, and COVID-19 was just another stepping-stone that the Hygge team graciously took in their stride. They say the pandemic was their toughest challenge, yet also their biggest achievement.
“With events and weddings postponed, we had to make a lot of adjustments to our business model. We learnt that you have to be resilient, you have to roll with the punches, and you have to adapt. We decided to re-shift our focus to our new office space on King William Road, Hygge Atrium, a bespoke venue for hire and workshops. Launching the space has opened the doors to amazing workshop experiences, collaborations and events!” says Rachel.
As UniSA alumni, both girls reminisce on their schooling days and explain how they are constantly drawing on the skills they learnt on campus.
“We
encourage everyone, especially while at university, to try different jobs, as it helps you gain different skills to use later in life”, Rachel says.
“I agree with Rachel, my top tip for university students looking at getting into events is to gain some catering experience, graphics experience, and try some floristry; no experience is bad experience it’s great to get it all under your belt!”
In true Hygge fashion, there is nothing better than a surprise waiting on the horizon that is sure to blow our minds away. |
