Team UniSA's stellar achievements in the spotlight
|
|
As we approach the end of the year, we are excited to share some of Team UniSA’s intervarsity sport achievements in 2023.
Team UniSA participated in the UniSport Nationals snow event held in Thredbo, New South Wales, from 3–7 September, where three students represented us in skiing events and delivered remarkable performances. Finn Bowes and Alfie Wenk won silver and bronze medals respectively in both the panelled slalom and slalom events.
53
students then proudly represented Team UniSA at the UniSport Nationals in Queensland from 23-29 September. They participated in eight different sports teams, including cycling, judo, lacrosse, tennis (men's and women's), mixed netball and volleyball (men's and women's). Our athletes achieved significant success, with a standout moment when Lillee Wakefield won a gold medal in judo. The men's tennis team also won the Div 2 silver medal, while the mixed netball team won the Div 2 bronze medal.
We extend our warmest congratulations to all our student athletes. These highlights are a testament to the vibrant sports culture at UniSA, and we look forward to celebrating future successes and supporting our students as they continue to represent Team UniSA.

Martin Perelman: The driving force behind SILK Laser Clinics
|
|
With a Bachelor of Management from UniSA, Martin Perelman saw a business opportunity with three friends in 2009 and decided to take the plunge. At the time, Martin was working in the Swiss watch industry in Sydney; this was his side hustle. Calling on friends and family for interior design, branding and fit-out, the first SILK Laser Clinic opened in Martin’s hometown of Adelaide in 2009. To his surprise, within weeks they achieved more than $10,000 in sales!
In 2014, Martin returned to Adelaide with his wife and young family and joined the business full-time, and they continued to open new stores, knowing they had to diversify while remaining specialists. Eventually, Martin’s partners exited the business, and he brought on private equity investment to ensure continued growth.
In
mid-2020 SILK listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, but this year will move into the next phase of ownership and became a key part of the cosmetic offering in the newly formed Wesfarmers Health division. Martin remains at the helm but no longer has a stake in the company. As a proponent of self-belief and a good work ethic, he is now looking forward to the next chapter of his life, whenever that arrives.
