Adelaide University announces Aboriginal name
|
|
We are proud to announce that Adelaide University has been bestowed the Kaurna name Tirkangkaku, meaning Place of Learning.
Adelaide University is the first university in Australia to have provision for an Aboriginal name in its founding legislation, signifying our commitment to integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges and ways of doing across our learning, teaching and research.
AU Deputy Vice Chancellor: Indigenous, Professor Steve Larkin, says the name emerged through deep consultation with Elders, academics, and the community, and as a gift from the Kaurna People, Tirkangkaku connects Adelaide University to more than 65,000 years of continuous knowledge and discovery.
To
launch Tirkangkaku, an installation has been created in collaboration with Kaurna, Narungga and Kokatha artist, Clem Newchurch. In this installation, the Aboriginal name has been woven with native florals, greenery and netting. Clem works with South Australian native resources to recreate contemporary art pieces inspired by his Ancestors and used a Kaurna style weaving to create string used for making nets, fishing lines or binding spear tips. |
