Celebrating our Student Volunteer of the Year Award winners
We’re proud to announce that Swathi Pisipati and Ruth Appiah have been named UniSA’s Student Volunteer of the Year 2025. Their volunteering journeys have been nothing short of inspirational, reminding us that small acts of kindness can create a big impact.

Swathi is a Master of Design student from India. Her passion for volunteering is deeply rooted in her upbringing, where she learnt the values of compassion and community from her parents. Those values guided her to contributing more than 200 hours of volunteer service, supporting the Salvation Army, USASA Op Shop, and key UniSA events.

Since arriving in Adelaide in 2023, Ruth has volunteered more than 350 hours while balancing her PhD studies and clinical work. Her volunteering work spans across Baptist Care SA, STTARS (Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitation Service), Vision Australia Radio, Australia Day Council of SA, and more.

Step up. Speak out. – The active bystander way
If you’ve ever seen or heard something that didn’t sit right – like a sexist joke or a comment that crosses the line – and thought, “That’s not okay”, you’re already on the path to becoming an active bystander. Check out these real-life scenarios to see what stepping up looks like in action.

To help you take the next step, UniSA’s active bystander training module gives you the tools and confidence to safely support others and speak out when it matters. You’ll learn how to recognise everyday sexism, understand its impacts, and respond using the 4Ds:

• Direct – call it out.
• Distract – intercept the behaviour.
• Delegate – get help from someone with authority.
• Document – note what happened and consider making a report.

Student story: Digital sunset
Have you ever found yourself scrolling on your phone before sleep? Read how UniSA Master of Social Work student Xinwei (Heather) Yin made one small change that led to a big difference.

“For a long time, I struggled with sleep. At night I would lie in bed scrolling endlessly through my phone, telling myself ‘Just one more video, one more post’. The next morning, I woke up tired, anxious, and guilty. The cycle repeated itself – less sleep led to more anxiety, and the more anxious I felt, the more I relied on my phone as a distraction.

One evening, a thought struck me: I treat my phone with more care than I treat myself. I charge it and turn it off to rest, yet I never gave myself the same permission. That was when I decided to create my own ‘Digital Sunset’: one hour before bed, I would put down my phone. Instead of scrolling, I began to stretch, journal a line of gratitude, or simply listen to quiet music.

Within weeks, I noticed small but powerful changes. I fell asleep more easily, and my mornings no longer started with guilt but with calm. Looking back, I realise that the Digital Sunset is about more than sleep. Switching off from screens is really about switching on to myself.”
