Rhodes Scholarships

Rhodes Recipient The Rhodes Scholarship supports exceptional young people for postgraduate study at the University of Oxford, and actively fosters lifelong learning and fellowship..

Applications for the South Australian Rhodes Scholarships are invited annually. The Rhodes Trust offers nine Rhodes Scholarships in Australia each year, one for each state and three for Australia at Large. A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. All fees are paid by the Trust direct to the college. In addition, a Rhodes Scholar receives a personal stipend and assistance with travelling expenses to the U.K.

In his Will, Cecil Rhodes defined the type of scholar he was seeking as having:

  • literary and scholastic attainments
  • energy to use one's talents to the full
  • truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
  • moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings

The Will also directs that 'no student shall be qualified or disqualified for election to a Scholarship on account of race or religious opinions'.

Full details of how to apply and scholarship details may be found at the official Rhodes Scholarships for Australia page at the Rhodes Trust.
