International Students

For many students, commencing university life in Australia is an exciting time, but it can also be daunting and a bit overwhelming!

The Connect Adelaide Experience is a welcoming initiative where new international students are connected with a UniSA Staff member to experience Adelaide and life in Australia in a social setting, on or off campus. UniSA will make the introduction between you and the volunteer, so you’ll know someone at Uni as soon as you arrive!

This program is available to you if you are a new international student who has not lived in Australia before and are over 18 years of age.

As a new international student to UniSA, your volunteer might invite you to:

  • Meet over coffee or a meal
  • Have a BBQ in one of Adelaide’s many parks
  • Watch or participate in a sports activity
  • Visit an Adelaide attraction together
  • Go to the beach

All costs associated with the social activity are expected to be covered by your UniSA volunteer. The only cost you might have to incur is transportation.

Your Connect Adelaide Experience is designed to take place at the beginning of Study Period 2, 2019

Registrations are now closed for Study Period 2, 2019.  Please note that there were limited places available and due to the overwhelming student response these have now been filled.

This is a great opportunity to informally connect with a UniSA staff member and quickly feel part of our UniSA community. As a result of the Connect Adelaide Experience international students indicate they have felt welcomed and supported in the formative first few weeks of their arrival in Adelaide.

You must be a newly arriving international student, who has not resided in Adelaide before and is over the age of 18.

The staff volunteer will cover all costs associated with the Connect Adelaide Experience activity. You may need to cover your own travel costs to your arranged activity, unless otherwise negotiated with your matched volunteer.

Yes. Registration closes 21 February 2019. Given the high number of international students enrolling in our University every study period, we recommend you register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Places are limited and if it becomes full, we may close the registration earlier.

As this is a welcome initiative, you only need to meet once. The expectation is that you and the volunteer will negotiate a time together to meet for a casual coffee, meal or activity as early as possible once you commence study. After this meeting, there is no obligation to you to continue to meet again, however, if agreed by you and your volunteer you can do so.

We try to match by campus location in the first instance. It is not possible to select the staff volunteer yourself.

We understand that things can come up at the last minute, but you must be polite and let the volunteer know.  Please communicate as soon as possible with your staff volunteer to say that you can’t make it, and try not to wait until the last minute to advise them.
