Shopping Hacks

Did you know Australians discard up to 20% of the food they purchase? Check out the simple shopping hacks below to save yourself your food, time and money.

  • Check through your pantry and fridge before going shopping.

  • Then write a shopping list, including quantities so you don’t overbuy.

  • Plan your meals weekly, accounting for any events for which you won’t need to provide your own meal, and ingredients that you already have.

  • Buy fruit and vegetables that are in season.

  • Buy only what you need and will use, to encourage you to cook and eat the food at home instead of buying takeaway.

  • Make use of supermarket specials when buying pantry staples (e.g. pasta, flour, rice). Spend most of your food budget on the five food groups, to get the most amount of nutrients in the least amount of kilojoules:
    • Vegetables and legumes/beans
    • Fruit
    • Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties
    • Lean meat and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, and seed and legumes/beans
    • Milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or their alternatives
