Change the Course Report to Australian Human Rights Commission




Policy and Procedure  Establish a Project Steering Group that will be responsible for guiding the implementation of recommendations.
  • Project Steering Group established, chaired by the Pro Vice Chancellor: Student Engagement and Equity and reporting to the Senior Management Group (SMG)
  • Membership includes students, and external subject matter experts

Development of a well-defined sexual assault and sexual harassment policy and procedures for students and staff, including the following components:

  • A ‘triage model’ to support students/staff who wish to disclose or report an incident of sexual assault or sexual harassment
  • A framework underpinned by the services and support structures available for students and staff
  • Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Policy and Procedures finalised and approved by UniSA Council in 2018.

Student Support

The University ensure that a “fit for purpose” support structure exists around student wellbeing, and that students are aware of the relevant resources available both internal and external to the University.

  • Includes the appointment of a Counsellor and Training Coordinator (Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment) who will provide specialist support and advice to students who have experienced sexual assault or sexual harassment.
Development of a dedicated webpage to assist students and staff to access the appropriate resources, supports and detailed steps to be taken when a disclosure or report of sexual assault/harassment is made.
Provision of increased resources and support services for students including enhanced promotion of the Safe Zone app, promotion of UniSafe service where campus security staff provide an escort service after hours and increased access to drop-in counselling services.
Training and Development (including ongoing education and awareness raising campaigns)

Develop a training framework that:

  • Delivers a programmatic approach to student/staff training, using a tiered approach
  • Identifies existing resources and communications campaigns to reinforce key messages of education programs.

  • The University has also appointed a Counsellor and Training Coordinator (Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment) who will implement the training framework and develop additional, fit-for-purpose training programs and resources for students and staff at UniSA.
  Develop a standalone webpage to support the University’s initiatives, policies and procedures around sexual assault and harassment, including ongoing communication and awareness campaigns.

Establish a communications campaign to:

  • disseminate key messages and information to students and staff at the appropriate times
  • support ongoing education and awareness raising around sexual assault and sexual harassment
  • support the creation of safer communities on campus and a safe, respectful and inclusive culture in which all students and staff are valued
  • Draft communications plan developed and in progress
  • Working Group established to implement the plan – includes student representation and, wherever possible, specific initiatives will be delivered in partnership with students
Managing Disclosures and Reporting Explore options for establishing a central reporting system for both students and staff to disclose incidents of sexual assault and/or harassment. The reporting system to set up an online mechanism where students can submit formal reports of sexual assault and/or harassment.
