What survey tools are available for researchers?

There are a wide range of survey tools available online. A few options are listed below. Most of these options provide both free and paid subscription plans with varying levels of features.

When evaluating survey tools, it is important to consider if there are any restrictions which prevent you from hosting data on external cloud-based services. If in doubt, please check with the Research Office (Ethics).


UniSA Hosted survey tools

The following survey tools are available for free to all UniSA Staff and Students.

REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. Whilst REDCap can be used to collect virtually any type of data, it is specifically geared toward supporting online and offline data capture for research studies and operations.

REDCap is hosted by the University and all data is stored on University servers. Surveys are open to both internal and external audiences.

LimeSurvey

LimeSurvey is a web application that allows you to develop and publish surveys and collect responses. It is available for free to all UniSA Staff and Students.

Note: Students will require an account to be created in LimeSurvey before using for the first time. Please request an account via the ISTS Helpdesk.

Free survey tools

The following survey tools are available for free to all UniSA Staff and Students.

You can easily create basic online surveys customising questions and saving user responses to an Excel spreadsheet linked to OneDrive.

Office Forms

Create and share webforms that with in built analytics via Office 365.

The following table shows the number of forms, questions per form, and responses per form available for customers of Microsoft Forms:
