Higher Education Research Data Collection

The Department of Education Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) comprises research income data submitted by universities to the department each year. Data collected, together with data from the Higher Education Student Data Collection, is used to determine annual allocations to universities for the research block grants

Research income collection

Income reportable under the HERDC is collected and managed in the My UniSA Research Management system. The UniSA Research Office is responsible for the activation and verification of all research projects and, together with Unit Accountants and Corporate Finance compile the annual return.

Universities must provide research income grouped in the following four categories:

Research Expenditure

The University is also required to report research expenditure to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Research projects are required to be categorised by the Type of Research, Field of Research codes and Socio-Economic Objective.
