This division covers R&D which primarily benefits or has application to the exploration, mining, extraction and processing of mineral resources, other than energy mineral resources. It includes R&D directed towards environmentally sustainable exploration, extraction and processing of mineral resources.
This division has five groups.
Group 8401 Mineral Exploration
This group covers R&D directed towards exploration for minerals, other than energy mineral resources. It includes precious and semi-precious stones and mineral sands.
This group has nine objectives:

- alumina and other non-ferrous metal intermediates;
- precious metals, heavy mineral sands and other mineral and metal ore intermediate products; and
- processing diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones prior to the cut gem stage.
This group has seven objectives:

This group covers R&D directed towards environmentally sustainable exploration, mining, extraction, and processing of mineral resources, other than energy mineral resources, by minimising the generation of wastes and by reducing or optimising the consumption of water and other natural resources.
