Online module: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Introduction

This module introduces you to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). The module begins with you reading some short extracts from Ernest L. Boyer’s book titled ‘Scholarship reconsidered: Priorities of the professoriate’ which was published 30 years ago and is widely regarded as the catalyst for development of theory, practice and discourse associated with SoTL. Then, you’ll get a sense of how things have evolved since Boyer’s work, including the difference between ‘scholarly teaching’ and ‘the scholarship of teaching and learning’. You’ll be provided with some resources to develop a scholarly foundation for teaching and learning in higher education. Then, you’ll be introduced to the DART model which will position SoTL practice in relation to other activities related to teaching. You will also be provided with additional resources should you want to explore the area further. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module you should be able to: 

• Recognise the background which led to SoTL becoming a feature of teaching and learning in higher education.
• Critically appreciate the difference between Boyer’s Scholarship of Teaching (SoT)/scholarly teaching and the more contemporary Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
• Locate and utilise resources to help develop your scholarly foundation for teaching and learning in higher education.
• Describe the Dimensions of Activities Related to Teaching (DART) model, including how the model positions Scholarly Teaching, SoTL, Sharing about Teaching, and the Practice of Teaching in relation to each other and why.
