Mandated Training & SPRT

Academic Practice@UniSA

As part of the academic probation process, all new academic staff (Levels A-C) who are employed at UniSA in continuing positions or on fixed-term contracts (12 months or more) must complete the Academic Practice@UniSA program within their first year of employment. Visit the Teaching Innovation Unit (TIU) website to find out more about Academic Practice@UniSA.

Line Managers can support the compliance associated within the policy and procedure by:

  • Highlighting the training requirements to the staff member and Program Directors or Research Leads (or equivalent) when the initial preparation email sent
  • The staff member to provide the latest training completion dates for each review (along with an up to date ASAR and CV) for the Line Manager to add to the Review Summary (can copy and paste from email) and follow up if not registered / completed
  • Providing an update to the Teaching and Innovation Unit (TIU) in relation to numbers of academic staff required to complete this training to ensure that adequate training sessions can be provided
  • Clarification with the staff members as to what constitutes as ‘attendance’

Summative Peer Review of Teaching (SPRT)

As part of the academic probation process, staff members who have a teaching academic workload or a teaching and research academic workload, will be required to undertake a Summative Peer Review of Teaching (SPRT) as part of their probationary period. Where undertaken, the information should be incorporated into the review discussion.

For staff who have a teaching and research workload or a research only workload, reviews will include consideration of demonstrated evidence of their research performance and knowledge application activity and its effectiveness. This may include consideration of publications, grants received and research collaborations.

Line Managers can support the compliance associated within the policy and procedure by:

  • Highlighting the requirements to staff member and Program Directors or Research Leads (or equivalent) when the initial preparation email sent
  • Reminding the staff member the requirement to present a SPRT for Committee review at the mid-point review to ensure that it is obtained during the probationary period)
  • Strongly recommend that a SPRT be presented for every review
