Tertiary Access Payment (TAP)

The Tertiary Access Payment is funded by the Commonwealth Government following a recommendation by the Napthine Review. It helps students with additional costs associated with the transition to higher education, such as relocation, travel and accommodation.

It aims to encourage students in outer regional and remote Australia to access high-level tertiary study (Certificate IV or above) in the year immediately following Year 12, rather than taking a gap year.

The TAP will be made in two installments post census date, $3,000 in Study Period 2 2021 and $2,000 in Study Period 5 2021. 

Please note that payments will be allocated in order of application submission, that is, a first-come, first-served basis and assessed against the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility requirements

The TAP will be available for school leavers who are:

  • From an outer regional, remote or very remote area (eligibility can be checked by using the Student Regional Area Search Tool)
  • Be aged under 22 at time of enrolment
  • Be undertaking eligible tertiary study in the first half of 2021 immediately following completion of Year 12 or equivalent with no gap year (or the first available semester of their chosen course if the course has a mid-year, or later, start)
  • Be studying face to face, or in dual delivery method, for at least part of the course
  • Be enrolled full time in a Diploma or Bachelor Degree, with a course duration of at least one academic year
  • Have parent(s) or guardian(s) with a combined income of less than $250,000
  • Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, holder of Permanent Humanitarian Visa or being a New Zealand citizen meeting Australian Residence rules under section 7 of the Social Security Act 1991


Eligible candidates will be considered in order of application submission.

How to Apply

Applications will be open from 14 January 2021 to 6 April 2021 via My Scholarships.

When applications become available, Applicants must submit the following supporting documentation: 

  • Evidence of Australian citizenship, permanent residency
  • Proof of residence in an outer regional, remote or very remote area in Australia
  • Indicative evidence of where the Applicant will relocate to at point of application, followed by confirmation of the new address once the Applicant has relocated
  • Evidence of parental income such as 2019-2020 tax returns (preferred), payslips, a letter from employer or accountant
