Waste Management

The University of South Australia is working collaboratively with our waste management provider to minimise the amount of waste which is taken to landfill.

So what happens after you place your rubbish in the bin?

Your rubbish is locally collected and consolidated by our on site cleaners. You may notice your cleaner placing different bin liner bags within each other, but please do not be concerned as this is just the first step of the waste management process.

All collected mixed waste is then transported to a waste sorting facility. The facility is specifically designed to separate our waste into different streams. These include:

  • Food/green waste
  • Co-mingle waste (plastic, glass, metal)
  • Cardboard/paper
  • Other waste which  is sent to landfill

This has helped the university to significantly reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill each year.

Other waste streams are also collected across the university to manage unique types of waste. This includes:

  • Liquid waste
  • Batteries (battery bins are located in all our FM Assist offices)
  • Medical waste
  • Confidential waste

Please see our Environmental Management webpages if you would like more information on our waste management performance.
