Residency requirements of a Commonwealth supported place

Australian citizens and New Zealand citizens that hold a special category visa (SCV)

To meet the residency requirements to be eligible for a commonwealth supported place (CSP) Australian citizens and SCV holding New Zealand citizens must live in Australia for at least part of their program.

For example, if you intend on studying overseas via distance education for your entire program, then you would not meet the CSP residency requirements and you are not eligible for a commonwealth supported place.

Permanent Residents, non SCV New Zealand citizens and Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders

Permanent Residents, non SCV New Zealand citizens and Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders must live in Australia for the duration of their program to be eligible for a commonwealth supported place.

However, any period of residence outside Australia will be disregarded if:

  • it cannot reasonably be regarded as indicating an intention to reside outside Australia for the duration of a course; or
  • it is required for the purpose of completing a requirement of that course.
