Aboriginal Cultural Sensitivity & Respect

This training is designed to provide staff at UniSA with the information, skills and knowledge necessary to develop cultural sensitivity and respect across our workplace.

This full-day workshop aims to raise awareness and begin the process of developing a working understanding of Aboriginal Australia. Through this, participants will be better prepared to engage in genuine cross-cultural communication and to identify strategies for working together.

Upon completion of the program you will have:

  • Understand the distinction between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country and when it is appropriate to engage each one.
  • Identify the impacts of past government policy and practice and the trans-generational impacts.
  • Increase awareness of the historical events that have compounded disadvantage for Aboriginal Australians.
  • Identify the impact of Federation, the Australian Constitution and the 1967 Referendum on Aboriginal Australians.
  • Understand the impacts of colonization on the population and wellbeing of the Aboriginal Australian community.
  • Understand how to apply 5 principles of Cultural Safety and cultural mindfulness to develop culturally safe, sensitive and respectful relationships with Aboriginal people.
  • Understand the significance of ‘Identity’ for Aboriginal Australians as it applies to the commonwealth 3-part definition of Aboriginality.
  • Identify and understand the main forms of racism and impact on victims.
  • Identify personal opportunities to develop culturally safe, sensitive and respectful relationships with Aboriginal people.

Equivalent trainings include 'Aboriginal Cultural Awareness' or 'Aboriginal Cultural Safety' run at the University since 2014.
