f5 BigIP Edge VPN Client install options

Important:

The University of South Australia is migrating its VPN services to a new solution.  The following migration schedule provides details on when different cohorts of users will be impacted and provides instructions on how to access the new VPN solution.

Migration Schedule

  1. Wednesday 24/05/2023 - Students using Cisco ASA VPN (anyConnect client) will need to change to using the Big-IP Edge Client to connect to the new f5 VPN (see Accessing the new VPN Service section below). Cisco VPN service will be suspended from 8:00am and the new service will be available from 9:00am using the new Big-IP Edge Client software.
  2. Thursday 25/05/2023 - CISRES & CYBERNET using Cisco ASA VPN (anyConnect) will need to change to using the Big-IP Edge Client to connect to the new f5 VPN (see Accessing the new VPN Service section below). Cisco VPN service will be suspended from 9:00am and the new service will be available from 10:00am using the new Big-IP Edge Client software.

Accessing the new VPN Service (from the times specified above)

  1. To access the new VPN service, navigate to the following new url from your web browser: https://access.unisa.edu.au
  2. After completing Multi-Factor Authentication on the webpage, navigate to “f5 VPN clients” section and download the f5 client for your computer. Once download follow instructions on f5 BigIP Edge VPN Client install options.
  3. Once installation has completed open the Big-IP Edge Client application and configure your client to connect to: access.unisa.edu.au.

The use of all Information Technology (IT) facilities at the University of South Australia, including the UniSA wired and wireless networks, is subject to the University's Acceptable use of Information Technology (IT) facilities policy

If you are using a blue plated computer, the software should already be installed, but while on campus you should check by doing Step 1 and 2 of connecting to UniSA VPN. Otherwise, you wil be able to install it through the Software Center.

If neither of these options are available to you, you can follow the personal device instructions below, but you must be on campus should you need the IT Help Desk assistance with admin rights to complete the installation.

Personal Device

  1. Download Windows f5 BigIP Edge Client
  2. Open the BIGIPEdgeClient.exe from the location that you saved it in step 1.
  3. Click Install
  4. If you see the Windows Defender Smart Screen warning click More info and then Run anyway
  5. Program will show a progress bar
  6. Click Finish

  1. Download macOS f5 BigIP Edge Client
  2. Click Save
  3. Unzip the bigipmacedgeclient.zip folder from the location that you saved it in step 1.
  4. Click mac_edgesvpn.pkg from extracted files
  5. Click Continue
  6. Click Install
    NOTE:
    If prompted enter login details for the device. If a UniSA Blue Plated Mac this will be your UniSA credentials and then click Install Software.
  7. Program will show a progress bar
  8. Click Close when install success is indicated
  9. This is a once off process and you can click Move to Trash if prompted/desire.

Instructions for the access client are similar, the layout changes slightly;

  • Use Certificate: False
  • Connect on Demand: False

 

Note: IOS users will need notifications enabled for “F5 Access” if they want to use the settings menu to initiate the VPN connection.
