The use of all Information Technology (IT) facilities at the University of South Australia, including the UniSA wired and wireless networks, is subject to the University's Acceptable use of Information Technology (IT) facilities policy.

Use of the eduroam wireless network is governed by the Australian eduroam policy and UniSA's Acceptable use of Information Technology (IT) facilities policy.

What is eduroam?

When away from UniSA, eduroam (education roaming) provides a secure wireless connection for UniSA students and staff while they are visiting participating eduroam institutions (over 500 sites throughout 30 countries).  Connecting to the home institution's eduroam network will provide you access to the internet, and you can then set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access UniSA's internal network.

NOTE: Instructions are institutionally specific and if you are visiting UniSA from a participating eduroam institution please refer to Connecting to eduroam (Visitors and Guests).

Connecting to eduroam Wireless with UniSA credentials

  1. Enable wireless on your device (if required)
  2. Open Wireless Manager
  3. Select eduroam
  4. Select Connect
  5. Enter your UniSA credentials:
    • Username: <your UniSA user name>@unisa.edu.au
    • Password: <your UniSA password>

NOTE: If a 'Certificate Not Verified' message is displayed, ensure that the certificate shows either the name "wireless.unisa.edu.au" and the Root CA is "AddTrust External CA Root" or the thumbprint "61 ea eb dd 3f 42 b1 24 82 a1 1f c9 ed 1c b7 fc 09 c7 82 f1".
If so, select Connect - otherwise Cancel.

Quick eduroam Settings

The following settings are required for the unisa wireless network to function correctly:

SSID: eduroam 
Access Point Authentication: 802.1X Security or WPA2/AES
EAP Type + Authentication Protocol: EAP PEAP with MS CHAP V2  
Username: <UniSA Username>@unisa.edu.au
Service/CA Certificate: wireless.unisa.edu.au or select Use system certificates
Domain: wireless.unisa.edu.au
NOTE: You may not need this, it depends on your device
Identity: <UniSA Username>@unisa.edu.au

eduroam Helpful Hints

  • It is important to configure and if possible test eduroam before travelling to identify potential issues while you have access to support from the UniSA IT Help Desk.  If you are in the Adelaide CBD you may be able to test your external eduroam configuration using the University of Adelaide eduroam network.
  • Some sites may require the use of a VPN for internet access  
  • The eduroam network is not content filtered and access by staff or students under-18 requires parental consent.  
  • Authentication information is recorded by UniSA in case of network abuse and for statistical purposes, and may also be recorded by the eduroam partner institution at which you are connecting.   - Please validate that the certificate name is "wireless.unisa.edu.au" and that it is signed by Auscert's "AddTrust External Root CA". Some OS will show the server thumbprint in the quick settings below.

NOTE: Only staff and students from participating eduroam institutions can access the eduroam wireless network.  If you are visiting the University and do not have access to eduroam please refer to the Guest Access to IT Services at UniSA.

If you are visiting the University of South Australia from a participating eduroam institution you can connect to the eduroam wireless network using your login credentials (username and password) and security settings from your home institution.

If you have issues connecting you will need to contact your home institution's IT Department for further assistance because UniSA has no control over your log in details

You must enter your full username including domain (e.g., jsmith@institution.edu.au).
So for UniSA staff visiting other institutions, you would login with:

  • User name:  <username>@unisa.edu.au
  • Password: <Your normal UniSA password>

NOTE: There is no need to use a VPN connection unless you need access to a specific service at your home site.

IMPORTANT:

  • The eduroam network is not content filtered and access by staff or student's under-18 requires parental consent.
  • Authentication information is recorded by UniSA and your home organisation in case of network abuse and for statistical purposes.
